Eagley

The eagle has landed!

A pair of bald eagles has nested at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Md. since 2009 and this year have successfully  raised a chick. They began building a nest in February, laid an egg and were attentive parents to the fledgling, who left the nest in June. Named “Eagley” in a random name raffle during SERC’s open house in May, the young eagle has been spotted hanging around the pond where he was born, actively hunting on his/her own. Juveniles don’t actually get their white head until their fourth or fifth year. Eagley actually appears exceptionally dark for a first year bird, which makes him unique.
