Taking the plunge

On Oct. 26,  the National Zoo’s 8-week-old lion cubs took a swim test under the supervision of Great Cats curator Craig Saffoe and keepers Rebecca Stites and Kristen Clark. The tests help the cubs learn how to climb out of the moat that surrounds their enclosure.

The cubs—three girls and one boy—were born Aug. 30 and 31 to five-year-old mother, Shera, and five-year-old father, Luke.
