Wild things

On a recent visit to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va., Secretary Wayne Clough had the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the rare and endangered animals housed at the Institute. Here, he holds one of the clouded leopard cubs born earlier this year.

The SCBI serves as an umbrella for the Smithsonian’s global effort to conserve species and train future generations of conservationists.

Secretary Clough feeds a young Przewalski’s Horse. The filly, born at the SCBI in 2008, was named Anne in honor of Mrs. Clough. Przewalski’s Horses were considered extinct in the wild until 2008.
