Castle Lecture Series: Explore the 3D Charter Collection

“The Smithsonian 3D Charter Collection”

Wednesday, March 21, Noon to 1:00 p.m., Castle Library

The Smithsonian 3D Charter Collection explores the use of cutting edge 3D technologies with some of the most iconic objects in our museums. Günter Waibel, Vince Rossi and Adam Metallo of the OCIO Digitization Program Office will introduce current plans and objectives of the Smithsonian 3D Charter Collection and address its potential impact on wider digitization efforts and the Smithsonian as a whole. Within the Smithsonian the goal of the Charter Collection project is to leverage the power of 3D technologies to fulfill the Smithsonian mission. Outside of the Smithsonian the Charter Collection is a tool to fundraise for Smithsonian-scale 3D digitization from corporate donors, and to galvanize a public/private partnership between the Smithsonian and the 3D industry. Learn about their accomplishments to date and join us in a discussion about strategies to move forward.

Refreshments will be served. Feel free to bring your lunch.

This 53-second video consists of a series of images taken with a Siemens Somotom CT scanner of a mummy at the Department of Anthropology in the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. The individual shown here is a male who died at about 40 years of age; a relatively mature age by ancient Egyptian standards. He is believed to have lived in Lower Egypt sometime between the 25-26th Greco-Roman periods, which is between 600 B.C. and about 150 A.D., or roughly between 2,500 and 1,900 years ago.
