April 27, 1962 The United States Congress approves a law (P.L. 87-443) to provide for a National Portrait Gallery as a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution.

The photo shows a southeast view of the Patent Office Building (not the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture), home of the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
