Earl Silas Tupper Research and Conference Center

April 3, 1987. Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for the new Earl S. Tupper Research and Conference Center at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. Ground was broken by His Excellency Don Eric Arturo Devalle, President of the Republic of Panama, and Glenn Tupper. In 1985, the Tupper Foundation donated $4 million toward the center’s construction.

In this 1989 photo, a Corotu tree, left, towers near the entrance to Tupper Center. The Center is used by STRI scientists and visiting researchers from around the world.
