May 5, 1997 Secretary I. Michael Heyman announces the establishment of a Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives. The center coordinates Latino research, exhibits, and projects at the Smithsonian.

The image shows “Colombia at the Smithsonian: The Colombian Presence in The Collections of the Smithsonian Institution,” which was on display from Sept. 6 until Oct. 5, 2006 in the Smithsonian Castle’s Schermer Hall. The project director Henry Estrada, the exhibitions and public programs director of the Smithsonian Latino Center, led a team of curators and museum specialists in assembling the pan-Institutional special exhibition.
