June 8, 1984. The first comprehensive exhibition of works by American folk artist Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900)  opens jointly at the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American Art (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum.) The exhibition was organized by the Springfield Museum of Art in Massachusetts.

The image shows a portrait of Julia Tuttle Bangs painted by Field in 1820.
