Office of Visitor Services

Maria Christus has joined the Office of Visitor Services as a Central Information Assistant, scheduling and overseeing Volunteer Information Specialists who work in the Castle.  Maria comes to the Smithsonian from the Adler Planetarium in Chicago where she was the Volunteer Program Manager since 2007.

Amy Lemon, manager of the Volunteer Information Specialist Program, has left OVS to accept a position as Program Manager with the Office of Fellowships and Internships. Amy joined OVS in 1999 as the Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer Program Assistant and began managing the program a year later. She took over management of the VIS program in 2011, where she increased the diversity of the volunteer corps by 23 percent. She also developed the first Smithsonian-wide volunteer management database, rewrote the 1986 Smithsonian Volunteer Management Directive 208, developed the first Smithsonian policy for Volunteer Retiree ID badges, and developed the first SI Visitor iPad Loan Program. Tania Mansour is serving as the Acting Volunteer Management Program Coordinator during the transition.

Office of Special Events and Protocol

Gina Kristin (KJ) Jacks has joined OSEP as Special Events Coordinator.  KJ was a special events assistant at the American Indian Museum for six years.

Office of Communications and External Affairs

Lynn Gutter has joined OCEA as a Marketing Communications Specialist.  She previously worked at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Erika Ferrin is as the new Brand Marketing Manager. Previously, Erica was Director of Marketing for the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Before that she spent nearly seven years at PBS where she was Associate Director for Advertising and Promotion.

Aurelie Beatley, who previously worked for the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, has joined OCEA as a Strategic Communications Assistant, where she is providing graphic design and logistical support.

Maria Anderson is a new bilingual Public Information Officer who will focus on outreach to the Latino media and community. She comes to OCEA from Comunicad agency in Arlington, Va., where she worked closely with the Traveling Exhibition Service to promote “American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music.”

After four years of service as staff assistant to the OCEA director,  Suleyka Lozins has joined the Office of Human Resources as a as a staff assistant in recruiting. Sean Williams, a 2012 graduate of Old Dominion University, is the new assistant to Evelyn Lieberman.

Office of Government Relations

Jim Wood has joined OGR as Government Relations Officer for science programs, after 14 years in Congress working for Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD).

National Zoo

Bobby Rodden has retired after more than 38 years as an animal keeper at the Conservation Biology Institute (formerly the Conservation Research Center.)

Originally hired as part of the fence crew, he began working part-time with animals as they began to be acquired; the first of which were two old National Park Service horses (one had pulled the caisson carrying John F. Kennedy’s casket). Over the years Bobby has worked with all the animals at the Front Royal facility, including the Zoo’s bird collection that was moved out during a major renovation at Rock Creek.  Since the keeper staff was so small back in the late 1970s, Bobby had a wide-ranging exposure to a diverse array of species, coming full circle to end his career as a hoofstock keeper—expertise that will stand him in good stead in his new career as a full-time beef cattle farmer.

Office of Policy and Analysis

Carole Neves has retired after 12 years of service as director of the Office of Policy and Analysis.  Carole was the founding director of OP&A and helped the Smithsonian comply with the Government Performance and Results Act and the President’s Management Agenda.  She led numerous analytical efforts, surveys and studies, including groundbreaking studies on Collections and Exhibitions. Whitney Watriss is Acting Director of OP&A.

National Portrait Gallery

Frank Goodyear

Curator of photographs Frank Goodyear and associate curator of prints and drawings Anne Collins Goodyear are leaving the Portrait Gallery to serve as co-directors of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine. Anne Collins Goodyear has been an associate curator at NPG since 2009, and began working there as an assistant curator in 2001.  Frank Goodyear also began his career as an associate curator at NPG in 2001.

Office of Planning, Management and Budget

David Voyles is now Director of the Office of Planning, Management and Budget. He had been an Associate Director in OPMG, where he oversaw the Smithsonian’s and led the effort to implement the plan to finance the National Campaign. David has held several other positions at the Smithsonian, including Senior Administrative Officer and Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Finance and Administration. He was the Associate Director for Financial Management in the Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations and the Associate Director for Administration in the Office of Protection Services.

Office of Development

Kirsten Peterson Johansen, Director of Leadership Giving for the Office of Development,  has left the Smithsonian to accept a position with the National Park Service as Senior Vice President of Development, Individual Giving. Kirsten came to the Smithsonian in 2004 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  During her nine years with the Office of Development, she was one of the Smithsonian’s most effective major and leadership gift fundraisers.

Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations

Walt Ennaco is now Deputy Director of the Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations. Walt has been the Project Executive for the National Museum of Natural History, the Associate Director for Project Management, the Director of the Office of Project Planning and Management, and has served as the Acting OFEO Deputy Director since April 2012. He has successfully managed and executed several significant projects, including the construction of state-of-the-art collections storage facilities and Sant Ocean Hall at the Natural History Museum. He also represents the Smithsonian at the Capital Planning Board, Regents Facility Committee, and the Office of Management and Budget, as well as briefing members of Congress on the Smithsonian Capital Program.

Sheri Vucci is the new Director of the Office of Business. Sheri has been a key member of OFEO since joining the organization as the Financial Management Officer for the Office of Physical Plant in 1997. Prior to this promotion, Sheri was Associate Director of Business Operations, where she was responsible for managing a $100 million dollar federal and trust budget and the human resource requirements for over 940 employees – the largest personnel workforce in the Smithsonian.

Charles “Chuck” Darby has been selected as the Facilities Operations Specialist (Building Manager) for the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability South Mall Zone for the Quad museums and Freer Gallery. Chuck has held several positions since joining the Smithsonian in 1997.Prior to his new position, he served as the Assistant Building Manager for the South Mall Zone where he worked mainly out of the Hirshhorn Museum.  Chuck has recently been working with the QUAD and Freer museums.

Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture

Corine Wegener is the Smithsonian’s Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer. After serving in the Army Reserve for 21 years, and working at the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts as a curator, Corine travels the country training soldiers in cultural heritage preservation. As the founder of the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, she played a critical role in the recovery of the National Museum of Iraq after devastating looting took place there during the war in 2003. Now at the Smithsonian, Corine’s portfolio includes everything from material science to museum organization to international law. She often calls on Smithsonian curators and collections to help impress upon soldiers the importance of cultural items she calls touchstones. For example, a unit preparing to deploy to the Horn of Africa, for example, received a special tour at the African Art Museum.

Smithsonian Enterprises

Bruce Dauer, formerly Acting Chief Financial Officer, has joined Smithsonian Enterprises in the newly created position of Vice President, Finance and Administration SE is responsible for all of the Smithsonian’s revenue-generating businesses, including the Smithsonian Media Division, Smithsonian Retail Division and the Consumer and Education Division (licensing, travel and education). Bruce will provide oversight in evaluating, prioritizing and implementing these revenue-generating activities, with a specific focus on strategic development and risk management. He also will have overall responsibility for budget, finance and human resources.

Office of Advancement

Marissa  Hoechstetter, Associate Director of Advancement for the Archives of America Art in New York, has left to accept a position with the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass.

Office of the Secretary

Grace Jaeger has accepted the permanent position of Special Assistant to the Secretary. Formerly assigned to the Office of the Regents, Grace had been filling in as the Secretary’s assistant and scheduler on a temporary basis.
