The Sixties Revisited

Time travel with Secretary Clough as he takes a look back at the 1960s, Smithsonian-style.

Do you have Smithsonian photos that exemplify the 1960s? Send a picture to torch@si.edu along with a brief description and we’ll feature it in the photo gallery!

National Zoo

Two children standing in front of the small mammal house at the National Zoo in 1969

This is a picture of my sister (on the left) and me standing in front of the Small Mammal House at the National Zoo. The photo was taken by my mother, Martha Payne, in 1969. She is a longtime supporter of the Zoo. I visited the Zoo so often as a child, I guess it why I ended up working there! — Submitted by Toni Brawner, Office of Facilities Management and Reliability

Mignon Erixon Merritt, age 4

This photo was taken in 1961 at France Field airport, near Galeta Point, Panama.
I was four. My dad had a plane and we’d go flying on the weekends.

On Sunday mornings, all the flyboys and families would gather at France Field for a breakfast buffet. Afterwards, we’d watch folks parachuting. My greatest desire was to jump out of a plane and float to the ground. It took me 40 years, but the dream finally came true. — Submitted by Mignon Erixon Merritt, Internet Coordinator, Hostmaster, OCIO
