Astrophysicist reaches new heights
Dr. Christine Jones, senior astrophysicist and lecturer on astronomy at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has been elected president of the American Astronomical Society. AAS, established in 1899 and based in Washington, D.C., is the major organization of professional astronomers in North America. Its membership includes physicists, mathematicians, geologists, engineers, and others whose research and educational interests lie within the broad spectrum of subjects comprising contemporary astronomy.
Jones, who has also served the Smithsonian as director of the Consortium for Unlocking the Mysteries of the Universe will begin her term at the AAS this summer. She continues her work at CfA, where her current research is focused on understanding the formation of clusters of galaxies and large scale structure and the impacts of supermassive black holes on the evolution of galaxies.
