“Connecting the Gems of the Indian Ocean”

A new app from the African Art Museum allows you to dig deeper into the cultures and connections between Africa and the Middle East.

The mobile app “Connecting the Gems of the Indian Ocean” is now available from the App Store or from Google Play for Android.

The African Art Museum has launched a new mobile app, “Connecting the Gems of the Indian Ocean” in conjunction with the museum’s multiyear series of programming that highlights the cross-cultural connections between East and North Africa and the Middle East. Developed and designed by the Balance Studios, the app will additional resources that will provide better context to the rich history of the communities surrounding the Indian Ocean.

The app is geared toward both general audiences and also those well versed in the connections between these regions. Highlights include:

  • Language components in Swahili, Arabic and English
  • Interactive maps
  • History of architectural connections
  • History of fashion and music
  • 3-D model viewers
  • Video content

The “Connecting the Gems” app is available for free download from the App Store at www.itunes.com/appstore or on Google Play for Android at https://play.google.com/store.
