Today in Smithsonian History: February 8, 1855

February 8, 1855 The Great Hall of the Smithsonian Institution Building (“The Castle”) is opened to the public as the site of the Metropolitan Mechanics’ Institute fair. First Secretary of the Smithsonian Joseph Henry is also president of the MMI, but we’re sure that is just a coincidence.
