Today in Smithsonian History: January 18, 1985

Nazaret ("Chic") Cherkezian, 1924-1996, director of Office of Telecommunications from 1976 until his retirement in 1986., stands beside equipment in Smithsonian Institution's OTC. Cherkezian's Smithsonian career began in 1974 when he became Telecommunications Coordinator for the Office of Public Affairs. Named Director of the Office of Telecommunications upon its creation in 1976, he was responsible for the Smithsonian's radio, television, and film productions until his retirement in 1986

January 18, 1980:  Two Smithsonian films, Celebrating a Century and The Smithsonian Institution with S. Dillon Ripley, Secretary, are aired on cable television through arrangements between the Office of Telecommunications and the Appalachian Community Service Network. The Smithsonian Institution with S. Dillon Ripley had received two Emmy Awards in June 1979 from the Washington, D.C., chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
