February 23, 1976 “The Federal City: Plans and Realities,” a three-dimensional look at the original plans for the District of Columbia, opens in the Great Hall of the Smithsonian Institution Building. A model of the city’s central area as it was in 1900 was created by the Office of Exhibits Central for the exhibition.
