Pablo Picasso, Interior of of Els Quatre Gats (The Four Cats), 1899
April 13, 1978 “Els Quatre Gats: Art in Barcelona Around 1900” opens at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The exhibition consists of 50 works by Pablo Picasso and 13 of his colleagues at the café “Els Quatre Gats,” all of whom helped shape and develop the concept of “modernismo” in art.
Els Quatre Gats, Catalan for “The Four Cats,” was a café in Barcelona (Catalonia) which opened in June 1897. It also operated as a hostel, a cabaret, a pub and a restaurant. Active until 1903, Els Quatre Gats became one of the main centers of Modernisme in Barcelona. (Puig i Cadafalch, Casa Martí 4Gats, Barcelona Entrada.
