#Because of HerStory: Zitkála-Šá

Violinist, activist, and author, Zitkála-Šá was a Yankton Sioux woman who fought for American Indian rights. In 1926 she founded the National Council of American Indians. When her autobiographical stories began publishing in 1900, she became the first American Indian woman to write her story in her own words.

See her stunning portrait in the collections of the National Museum of American History.
