Ethiopian Orthodox icon

Ethiopian Orthodox icon from the mid-late 17th century. Certain features help date this icon. St. George, for example, is slaying a serpent rather than a dragon, and Mary faces the viewer in a plain blue robe, the folds of which are depicted by a heavy linear overlay in a contrasting color. The Ethiopian saints, whose specific identifications vary, are also drawn in the style of 17th-century icons. (Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Miller)

May 23, 1984 “Ethiopia: The Christian Art of an African Nation” opens at the National Museum of African Art. The exhibition includes painted wood icons, crosses, crowns, incense burners and percussion instruments from the 15th century to the present. Modern photographs showing religious objects in use are also displayed.
