June 5, 1981 “George Catlin: The Artist and the American Indian” opens at the National Museum of American Art. On view through Sept. 13, the exhibition includes 104 of Catlin’s paintings from the museum’s collection. The exhibition is very popular and President Ronald Reagan makes a point of visiting.
