Discover the Moon Day, July 19

Join us for a day of educational and fun family activities in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. At Discover the Moon Day talk to our scientists and learn about lunar science!

Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall

  • Apollo 11 Traverse, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
    The path the Apollo 11 astronauts walked on the Moon would fit inside the Air and Space Museum.  Start at the Lunar Module and retrace the astronauts’ paths, stopping at stations through the Museum to learn about the landing site and the tools and experiments used there.
  • Pieces of the Moon, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
    See real meteorites that came from the Moon, with scientists from the National Museum of Natural History.
  • Seeing the Moon with Radar, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
    Learn how we can study the Moon from Earth and orbit using radar, with Planetary Scientists Bruce Campbell and Gareth Morgan.
  • Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
    Learn about this spacecraft currently orbiting the Moon and see stunning images, with LRO Camera Deputy Principal Investigator Brett Denevi and science team member Tom Watters.
  • What Rocks Would You Find on the Moon?, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm 
    Learn about the rocks found on the Moon by seeing similar rocks from Earth, with Planetary Scientists Jon Cawley and Jim Zimbelman.
  • Robot Explorers, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
    Hands-on activity with mini-robots

  • Images of the Moon in 3D, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
    View the lunar surface in 3D with red/blue glasses.
  • Lunar Art, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
  • Regional Planetary Image Facility, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
    Learn about the Museum’s RPIF, a NASA-funded archive of planetary imagery.
