July 4, 1977 The Smithsonian Metro Station formally opens on the National Mall at 12th Street, just east of the Smithsonian Institution Building. Metro General Manager Theodore Lutz presents Assistant Secretary Charles Blitzer with a farecard for inclusion in the transportation collection of the National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History.
