July 9, 1994 “The Smithsonian’s America: An Exhibition on American History and Culture” celebrating the sesquicentennial of the Smithsonian, opens at the American Festival Japan ’94 at the Nippon Convention Center in Chiba, Japan. The exhibit focuses on American history and the cultural diversity of the United States and features more than 300 objects from the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum and occupies 60,000 square feet, one-third of the Festival exhibition space.
