August 1, 1848 The chemical and physical apparatus and the electrical machines invented by Dr. Robert Hare, a professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, are presented to the Smithsonian Institution, where they go on display in the “Apparatus Room” of the Smithsonian Castle. Secretary Joseph Henry hopes the gift will set a precedent for other potential donors and sees it as supportive of his plan for the Institution.
