Today in Smithsonian History: September 22, 1891

Thomas George Hodgkins, 1803-1892, benefactor of the Smithsonian Institution, left an initial bequest of $200,000 to the Institution for research, especially on the atmosphere. Hodgkins Medal is given in his name. This photograph is of a bust portrait located at the National Portrait Gallery.

September 22, 1891 A gift of $200,000 is received from Thomas George Hodgkins of Setauket, New York, to be used, in part, for studies of the atmosphere in relation to human health. At Mr. Hodgkins death in November 1892, additional gifts are left by will to the Smithsonian. On October 25, 1893, the bequest of $42,000 in West Shore Railroad bonds is received. In May 1894, an additional $8,000 is received.

The Hodgkins Medal, established in 1893 in honor of Thomas George Hodgkins, who willed his fortune to the Smithsonian, is awarded for important contributions to the understanding of the physical environment as it affects the welfare of man.
