September 3, 1974 The Charles Willson Peale Papers project is established under a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Lillian B. Miller, Historian of American Culture at the National Portrait Gallery, is appointed editor. Peale (1741-1827) was an American painter, soldier and naturalist. He is best remembered for his portrait paintings of leading figures of the American Revolution.
