October 10, 1969 The largest exhibition ever assembled of the work of artist Charles Sheeler opens to the public at the National Collection of Fine Arts, now the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Charles Rettew Sheeler, Jr. (July 16, 1883 – May 7, 1965) is recognized as one of the founders of American modernism and one of the master photographers of the 20th century The retrospective includes 135 paintings and drawings and thirty-five photographs.
