In the 1920s, the Zoo employed less than 40 staff members, all of whom were men. Pictured here are some of the Zoo keepers and other employees, posed in front of a wooden wagon used to move animals. (Historical image featured in the Torch, October 1989)

October 22, 1923  Deer, wild goats, sheep and cattle are transferred without incident to several new enclosures near the Connecticut Avenue entrance of the National Zoological Park.

We’d like to think that this is noteworthy because deer, wild goats, sheep and cattle frequently ran rampant down Connecticut Avenue but we have no reason to believe this is true.
