October 29, 1982 The exhibition Charles Willson Peale and his World, reflecting the multifaceted talents of Peale as artist, scientist and inventor, opens at the National Portrait Gallery. Peale (April 15, 1741 – February 22, 1827) was an American painter, soldier and naturalist. He is best remembered for his portrait paintings of leading figures of the American Revolution, as well as for establishing one of the first museums in the United States.
