Director of the Office of Human Resources is retiring

After a 40-year career in the Human Resources and Labor Relations fields, Brenda Richardson Malone, Director of the Office of Human Resources since 2017, has announced her intention to retire in June 2020.

Malone will step down from her role as Director on December 1, to serve as Special Advisor to the Acting Under Secretary for Finance and Administration until her retirement next year. In this new role, she will report to Mike McCarthy and work closely with the Board of Regents’ Committee on Compensation and Human Resources on several important Executive/Senior Level projects and initiatives.

Since her arrival at the Smithsonian in December 2017, Brenda has worked to strengthen OHR’s role in the organization by providing value-added, responsive and effective programs and services. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, Brenda held several key leadership roles, including Vice President for Human Resources at Georgetown University; Vice Chancellor for Human Resources at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Relations at The City University of New York; and Deputy General Manager and General Counsel for SMART Transportation in Detroit.
