Today in Smithsonian History: November 13, 1876

Smithsonian Institution exhibit at the United States Government Building at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The Smithsonian coordinated all of the U.S. Government exhibits and prepared a display on its activities and collections for the exposition.

November 13, 1876 The National Academy of Sciences, over the signature of Smithsonian Secretary Joseph Henry, asks the U.S. President to recommend to Congress that it transfer to the Smithsonian the Government collection at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia as well as the continued support of the collection. Eventually, some 20 railroad cars of materials from the exhibition will be transferred to the Smithsonian.
