Smithsonian Volunteers by the Numbers

Smithsonian volunteers are engaged in almost every area of museum operations, playing an essential role in sharing our collections, welcoming our guests and engaging in educational programming for the public. We’ve broken down our volunteers’ contributions for Fiscal Year 2019 (October 1, 2018 – September 31, 2019.) Take a look and take a bow! We couldn’t do it without our volunteers.


Fiscal Year 2019 (October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019)

 6,896 on-site volunteers contributed 508,670 hours of their time.

1,884 digital volunteers transcribed 92,679 pages


One in four volunteers is multilingual

Office of Visitor Services Volunteer Programs

OVS supports several outreach and visitor information programs at the Castle and at OVS-supported museums across the Smithsonian.

594 volunteers contributed 50,250 hours to OVS-supported programs in FY 2019
