January 7, 2008  Smithsonian Photographic Services became part of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. After a workforce analysis in 2005, photographic services, then part of the Office of Public Affairs, were decentralized to individual units and museums. Given the importance of the Photographic Archives and their role as a major Smithsonian historical collections, Photographic Services was moved to the Smithsonian Institution Archives in 2008, where efforts are focused on preservation and enhanced access to the collections.
