“Forward Into Light” Photo Gallery

August 26 marked the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. With funding from the American Women’s History Initiative, Because of Her Story, the Smithsonian, along with many other cultural and historic institutions around the country, marked the anniversary by illuminating our buildings in the historic suffrage colors of purple and gold.

The “Forward into Light” campaign, organized by The Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission, in partnership with federal, state, and local leaders, is named in honor of the suffrage slogan, “Forward through the Darkness, Forward into Light.”

If you were unable to see this spectacular one-night display in person, enjoy these photos from talented Smithsonian photographers Jim Preston and Michael Barnes.
