Behind-the-Scenes Collections Connections
The Ralph S. and Rose L. Solecki Papers and Artifact Project
In 2017, the National Museum of Natural History’s Department of Anthropology and the National Anthropological Archives began a two-year collaborative project, through the Smithsonian’s Collections Care and Preservation Fund, aiming to connect the archival and artifact collections of archaeologists Drs. Ralph S. and Rose L. Solecki, known for their Discovery of nine Neanderthal skeletons at Shanidar Cave in northern Iraq from 1951-1960.
In March of this year, the Office of Visitor Services and Volunteer Management (OVS) hosted Museum Technician Molly Kamph for a talk about preservation and integration of these collections. Molly was also able and to share stories of the Soleckis and the past inhabitants of Shanidar Cave found within the collections.
