Now is the time to get vaccinated

If you are able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and have not yet done so, please do not delay any further.

The last 18 months have been difficult for all of us, and we have proven our mettle. Despite anxiety, fatigue, and isolation, our community has stepped up every single day since the start of the pandemic to deliver our mission, safeguard and protect our facilities and collections, and care for one another. Today, I am calling on you to do one more thing. If you are able to get vaccinated and have not done so already, now is the time.

More than 162 million Americans have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Globally, hundreds of millions of people have been vaccinated, and we have seen the dramatic results. In the areas where vaccination rates are high, new infections are low, hospitalizations are low, and death rates are low. The science and data demonstrate that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective. However, 162 million Americans is not enough. It is not even half of our population. As an Institution, community, and individuals, we must do more to keep each other safe.

An important part of our mission is to catalyze critical conversations on the issues affecting our nation and our world. With this message, we are continuing the conversation and our commitment to provide information and resources about vaccinations. In the coming weeks, you will hear more from me, your peers, and the trusted scientific and medical leaders in our own community. There will also be opportunities for us to listen to you and to hear your concerns.

It is my hope that over these weeks you will make the same decision as many others have across the Institution to become vaccinated and then to urge those around you to do the same. If you would like more information now, Vaccines & US: Cultural Organizations for Community Health offers resources that can help you make an informed decision.
