COVID-19 Team Update: Enhanced telework and on-site activities

Last week the Castle and the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall safely and successfully reopened their doors, and the Anacostia Community Museum will welcome back visitors tomorrow. We could not be happier about these reopenings, and we congratulate the museums on this tremendous progress.

Simultaneously navigating reopening, understanding how local and national vaccination rates impact our community, and responding to new threats associated with the Delta variant has raised a few new questions regarding our operations. Below are some responses to commonly asked questions you may have.

When will I be expected to report back to the workplace?

The Smithsonian is still operating under enhanced telework. Simply put, any work that can be done offsite, should be done offsite. Currently, up to 50% of a unit’s workforce may work on-site at a given time. This is a maximum level that allows directors and supervisors the flexibility to have staff on-site to accomplish certain tasks and meet specific deadlines. The Smithsonian has not set a date for when this maximum staffing level will change.

Can I come to the office if I need to be there?

In general, employees should not be on-site unless they are directed to report by their supervisor. However, if you need to accomplish something that can only be done on-site, speak with your supervisor to request permission to come to the workplace. Staff initiating requests to work on site should be the exception, not the rule.

Can I ask my coworker if they are vaccinated?

You may ask another staff member if they are vaccinated, though no one is required to answer this question. Please treat all your colleagues with respect and remember that all personnel in staff and public areas should be wearing face coverings – regardless of vaccination status.

How can I keep myself safe without knowing the vaccination status of the people around me?

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus by following all the safety procedures and getting yourself vaccinated. All staff are required to practice the following safety measures: wear a proper face covering, keep a safe social distance, and stay home if you feel ill.

How will the Smithsonian respond to the President’s guidance that federal employees attest to their vaccination status or get tested regularly for COVID-19?

The Smithsonian is still assessing the President’s guidance, receiving information from the Office of Management and Budget, and determining how to move forward. We will share additional information as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you are able to get vaccinated, you should do so. Remember to report your vaccination to Occupational Health Services.

Should you have additional questions, please visit the COVID-19 website or email the Response Team. Your flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances are keeping our community safe.

Stay safe, be well, and get vaccinated,
The COVID-19 Response Team
