Join Secretary Bunch in a virtual celebration of Smithsonian 175
Today, August 10, beginning at 3:00 p.m. si.edu/175
Dear Colleagues,
After a decade of often heated debate, on August 10, 1846, President James K. Polk signed legislation to establish the Smithsonian Institution. Since then, the Smithsonian has become the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums, the National Zoo, and nine research facilities.
Today, we celebrate beginning of the Smithsonian’s 175thanniversary year—a unique opportunity to share our spirit of learning and optimism about our future. While we should, and will, take pause and acknowledge our significant accomplishments, this anniversary is more than that—it provides a foundation for us to serve in new ways and with more impact.
Please join me this afternoon at 3 p.m. for a special virtual event to celebrate this landmark and look ahead to the coming years. The invitation and further information is below.
Since 1846, the Smithsonian’s mission of the “increase and diffusion of knowledge” has been at the heart of everything the Institution has done, and we have proudly shared our accomplishments with hundreds of millions of people across America and around the world. That continuing success is the result of the work of our dedicated staff and volunteers, from our first employee, William McPeake, to all of you here today.
Best wishes,
Lonnie G. Bunch
Secretary
