The importance of Supplier Diversity to Smithsonian operations

The Secretary reminds us that striving for diversity is part of our daily life.

The policy of the Smithsonian is to promote diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our business relationships. We spend as much as $450 million annually on goods and services. By promoting diversity in our suppliers, we create opportunities to develop innovative and cost-effective business solutions. The policy of the Smithsonian is to promote, increase and improve the participation of small businesses and historically underutilized businesses, such as those owned by minorities, women and service-disabled veterans.

I encourage you to review the current Supplier Diversity Policy Statement (Supplier Diversity Policy Statement), SD-216 and the Supplier Diversity Program Procedures Manual.

Supplier diversity should continue to be a priority consideration for all SI staff and affiliates involved in procuring goods and services.  We are all partners in creating mutually beneficial relationships with our suppliers and share the responsibility to promote supplier diversity at the Smithsonian Institution.

If you have questions or need help locating a small business for your procurement needs, contact the Office of Equal Employment and Supplier Diversity at sdphelp@si.edu or 202-633-6410.

Working together, we can continue the Smithsonian’s strong supplier diversity practices.
