FY 2022 SI Civil Report on Harassment and Workplace Culture at the Smithsonian
The SI Civil Program, established in 2021, presents high-level data on reported incidents of harassment and other concerning behaviors in the workplace and highlights the resources available to help build a culture of respect at the Smithsonian.
The SI Civil Program, established in January 2021, is a safe and helpful resource for Smithsonian employees and affiliated individuals to report incidents of harassment, intimidation, and other concerning behaviors. Among its goals is to be proactive in creating a culture of respect and accountability in which all staff are treated with dignity and gratitude. As part of the SI Civil Action Plan introduced in January 2022, we promised future enhancements to the SI Civil Program, including much-needed resources to support staff. Over the last year, we expanded the SI Civil team, implemented new supervisory training, and increased communication about how to report and find support.
In August, we announced the launch of Smithsonian’s new anti-harassment campaign and reporting system: Voice It. The SI Civil website provides more information on the different ways you can report incidents, including through Voice It; how to find additional support; and details related to the Smithsonian’s policies, procedures, and training opportunities. In a few short months, employees and staff have embraced this reporting tool and have appreciated the new method to report incidents, including the option to report anonymously.
We recently published the Fiscal Year 2022 SI Civil Report on Harassment and Workplace Culture, which highlights some of these new resources and presents high-level data on reported incidents of harassment and other concerning behaviors in the workplace.
In 2023, we will focus on building a culture of respect at the Smithsonian through new training for all employees and affiliated individuals and other SI-wide prevention and awareness activities. The SI Civil team is committed to building trust in this program and ensuring every report they receive is addressed.
We are all responsible for maintaining a respectful work environment at the Smithsonian and for supporting the goal of making the Smithsonian a welcoming and safe place to work and visit. Thank you all for your continued commitment to accomplishing this goal.

This is a bold move. Kudos. We are not alone in this endeavor. The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched its own internal campaign to combat harassment in all forms which includes posters on hallway walls with examples of actual words that are *not* okay to say. These examples are extracted from actual harassing statements.
