The war in Ukraine has raged for nearly a year with a horrific scale of human loss, forced migration and infrastructural destruction. Cultural heritage has been used as both a justification and target of the invasion, with its deliberate destruction making headlines around the world. As Ukrainians continue to fight for their freedom as a people with a history, culture and identity, the Smithsonian is providing on the ground assistance to museums and cultural organizations, as well as research on and remote satellite monitoring of potential cultural war crimes. The Smithsonian is also hosting exhibitions and programs fostering public understanding of Ukrainian culture and history. With the anniversary of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine approaching, the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative invites you to join us for an informational briefing on Wednesday, Feb. 22, to discuss important Smithsonian efforts and activities.
