Celebrate our most recent Distinguished Scholar in the Sciences

As we work to clear the pandemic-driven backlog regarding the Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar in the Sciences, Secretary Bunch invites you to join him on Thursday, April 6, at 10:00 a.m.  in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian for a presentation of the 2021 award to Dr. Janine L. Brown, Senior Scientist and Head of the Endocrinology Laboratory within the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Species Survival at Front Royal.

Dr. Janine L. Brown

Janine’s research has played a crucial role in the successful production of several giant panda cubs at NZP, secured over $20 million in grants, and helped establish wildlife endocrinology centers in Argentina, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Singapore, and Thailand—just to mention a few results. Her contributions have transformed our understanding of the fundamental biology of rare and endangered species, and her discoveries will forever benefit the management and recovery of species both in the wild and under human care. Her peers deem her “without doubt, among the best of all scientists working in the field of comparative endocrinology.”

Janine will present her lecture, “My Journey with Elephants: Integrating Science and Management” in person. For those who attend, there will be a reception in Janine’s honor immediately following the lecture and award presentation. The lecture will also be webcast for those not able to be present at NMAI.

Great thanks are due to the committee who assisted with the selection of 2021’s recipient:
