The Material Culture Forum invites all Smithsonian staff for a behind-the-scenes tour of the 2023 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. We will meet with The Ozarks: Faces and Facets of a Region and Creative Encounters: Living Religions in the U.S. program curators and festival technical staff before heading to selected areas. This is a great way to hear about the festival themes, meet some of the participants, and learn how the magic happens before the crowds arrive.
Interested SI staff and volunteers should meet at the Creative Encounters program Tree of Life (in front of the National Museum of American History) at 10:00 a.m. We will have the northeast gate closest to the Tree of Life open at 9:50. Please have your Smithsonian badge with you to show for entry. We will hear from Creative Encounters t curator Michelle Banks and then Tyler Nelson, Festival Technical Director, walk through the site to the Ozarks program and hear from curator Cristina Diaz-Carrera. The tour will end at 11:00, but people are free to stay as the grounds open.
The first 50 staff to arrive at for the 10:00 Behind-the-Scenes at the Festival will receive a $5 coupon for gelato at the Festival concessions.
We hope to see you there!
