Tomorrow, October 24 (Thursday), join colleagues for special viewing of the Anacostia Community Museum’s Mobile Art Gallery and current exhibition “A Bold and Beautiful Vision.”
Volunteers with a valid Smithsonian badge are invited to join fellow Smithsonian staff this Thursday, October 24 from 9–11 a.m. for a special viewing of the latest Anacostia Community Museum exhibition, A Bold and Beautiful Vision: A Century of Black Arts Education in Washington, D.C., 1900-2000. Attendees will need to show their badge upon entry into the event.
Featuring captivating original artworks, rare video footage, and awe-inspiring artistic artifacts, like Alma Thomas’s paintbrushes and watercolor paint set, original Elizabeth Catlett prints that once hung in the halls of her Washington high school, and Sam Gilliam artwork from the period when he was teaching at McKinley Technical High School. This exhibition traces the story of the teachers and students who made Washington, D.C. a truly unparalleled center for Black arts education. ACM staff will be onsite to answer questions about the exhibition and collection objects, as well as provide a deeper dive into the rich stories that comprise this exhibition.
Plus, the newly-opened CulturalDC Mobile Art Gallery is currently onsite at ACM and will be open early just for SI Staff this Thursday, October 24. Featuring a new installation by local artist Murjoni Merriweather, S E E D is an immersive space exploring the artist’s personal experiences with growth, patience, and self-care.
