I am pleased to announce that the Smithsonian has received a momentous $40 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. that will support the Institution’s celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.

The 250th offers tremendous opportunity for the Smithsonian and the nation. The Institution’s vision is to bring together people from all backgrounds and communities to reflect on what it means to be American. The celebration will include special exhibitions and programming across our museums and centers, an extension and expansion of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, temporary reopening of the Arts and Industries Building and Smithsonian Castle, and a series of partnerships, programming and digital activities that will make the Smithsonian accessible across the nation.

The Lilly Endowment grant acknowledges the vital role Smithsonian plays in helping Americans across the country find understanding, perspective and hope through our museums, public programs, traveling exhibitions and digital offerings.  Support from the Lilly Endowment will help us create an exceptional opportunity during the anniversary celebrations to come together, find connection and contemplate our shared heritage.

I look forward to working with you to shape the Institution’s plans for the 250th. We will offer unforgettable experiences and bring new perspectives to this historic milestone as only the Smithsonian can.
