Winter Photo Challenge: Life From the Frozen Earth
The longest nights of the year are at hand, and the Environmental Research Center wants to know where YOU find your sources of beauty and inspiration.
Send us your favorite winter nature pics, and they could appear on SERC’s website and social media as part of our 12 Nights of Solstice celebration (with credit to you, of course)!

Here’s how it works:
- Submit up to three winter photos taken by you or your child, following the theme Life From the Frozen Earth. Creative interpretations encouraged, but photos must be nature focused!
- A panel of SERC judges will choose five winning photos from Smithsonian staff or volunteers and five winning photos from the public.
- The final two photos will be chosen by YOU, in a new People’s Choice category! (Stay tuned in mid-December for info on how to vote.)
- We’ll feature a different winner on our social media for 12 nights, starting on the winter solstice Dec. 21.
