Traffic Advisory: Presidential Inauguration and Inaugural Events

We advise you to stay home.

On Monday, January 20, the 60th Presidential Inauguration will take place at the United States Capitol and National Mall. In preparation, federal and local Washington, D.C., security and emergency management teams are rerouting traffic, closing streets and installing barricades.

There will be extensive Metro station and road closures surrounding the National Mall and downtown D.C. starting Saturday, January 18 through Tuesday, January 21. Below are the planned closures and restrictions that will have the most direct impact on Smithsonian operations. Please use this link for a complete and continually updated list of closures. Also attached are maps for easier reading as the closure list is extensive, to say the least.

Federal Holiday

The celebration of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday falls on January 20 this year, so Inauguration Day is a federal holiday. Most Smithsonian museums will be closed to the public and staff should record their time and attendance in accordance with standard procedure for holidays.

Metrorail Service Adjustments

The following stations will close at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18 and reopen at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21:

All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions. 

The public should expect parking restrictions along the street and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage. All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed. 

Motorists could encounter possible delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes.  The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation also wishes to remind motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.
