Announcing our latest collaboration with USA TODAY: “Human/Nature”
The Office of the Under Secretary for Education and the Office of Communications and External Affairs are pleased to announce the release of Human/Nature, our 13th educational activity guide in an ongoing series produced in collaboration with USA TODAY. This collaboration has reached over 12.1 million households across the country since 2020.
With special thanks to Joy Columbus and her team at Smithsonian Gardens for developing the content in collaboration with educators in the Office of the Under Secretary for Education, this guide will reach an additional 1.3 million print subscribers nationwide on Sunday, March 23. In this premium edition 12-page guide, readers will learn about the many different careers that support garden spaces, consider the important role that pollinators play in our habitats, explore the vast array of Smithsonian collection objects and artworks that draw inspiration from the natural world, and gather tips and ideas from horticulturists ranging from caring for orchids to determining which materials to compost at home.
The guide, released just a few days after the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, brings garden stories submitted by the public through the Community of Gardens digital archive to readers nationwide— helping to preserve our diverse garden heritage through everyday garden stories and to serve as a reminder that we all have experiences and memories shaped by gardens and green spaces around us. Through connections to our museum spaces, this unique Smithsonian guide highlights the new Flight Garden at the National Air and Space Museum, the Three Sisters at the National Museum of the American Indian, and the Pippin Peppers at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Our sincere thanks and congratulations to everyone who contributed to this edition. It can be accessed and downloaded on the Smithsonian Learning Lab website and in the online Smithsonian Voices section of Smithsonian Magazine on Monday, March 24. Additional public-facing promotion via social media for the online version will begin thereafter.
We invite you to share this guide with learners of all ages who are interested in exploring our connections to plants, gardens, and the natural world around us, starting on Monday, March 24. For now, please enjoy a sneak peek of the publication and be sure to visit one of the many garden spaces across our Smithsonian campus.
