April 28, 1826 Due to a sudden resignation at Albany Academy, and through the influence of the school’s principal and Joseph Henry’s mentor T. Romeyn Beck, Henry was offered and accepted a professorship in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy.  Henry (1797-1878) taught natural philosophy at the Albany Academy (the equivalent of high school) and the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) before serving as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1846 to 1878.
