Two Smithsonian museums recognized with international design awards

The National Museum of the American Indian and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden represented the Smithsonian at the International Design Communication Awards (IDCA), where both museums were awarded for their innovative projects.

Hirshhorn Eye by HMSG was named “Best App” at the International Design Communication Awards.

Americans by NMAI was awarded with the “Best Website” category, given to the website with the most innovative use of technology and the most creative approach to driving traffic and raising awareness. Americans was competing with DX Lab by the State Library of New South Wales, Australia and Museum Without Walls by the British Council, Turkey.

Hirshhorn Eye by HMSG was named “Best App” for its design, visitor-friendly functionality, exclusive video content, and instantaneous delivery. Hirshhorn Eye was competing with Rijksmuseum SnapGuide by the Rijksmuseum, Netherlands and Smartify CIC, United Kingdom.

Created in 2007, the juried IDCA awards assess communications, design, and branding strategies within the arts and museum sphere, encouraging museums and art organizations to find original and inventive ways to communicate. Winners were presented this week at the 21st Communicating the Museum conference in Chicago.
