June 8, 1984 “Erastus Salisbury Field, 1805-1900,” the first comprehensive exhibition of works by the American folk artist, which was organized by the Springfield Museum of Art in Massachusetts, opens jointly at the National Portrait Gallery and National Museum of American Art.

Erastus Salisbury Field (Leverett, Mass., May 19, 1805 – Sunderland, Mass., June 28, 1900) was an American folk art painter of portraits, landscapes, and history pictures. More than 300 of Field’ portraits and other works survive.
